FirstEnergy $249 Million Settlement: Who Gets the Credit and How Much You’ll See
Ohio electric customers may soon see lower bills after regulators approved a $249 million settlement with FirstEnergy tied to the House Bill 6 corruption scandal.
The relief comes as bill credits, not cash, and eligibility depends on which utility you use and your usage level.
Who Is Eligible for the FirstEnergy Bill Credit?
You are likely eligible if:
-
You are a current or recent residential customer of a FirstEnergy utility in Ohio
-
You receive service from Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison, or The Illuminating Company
-
You had electric service during the period affected by the HB 6 charges
No application is required. Credits will be automatically applied to eligible accounts.
How the Settlement Lowers Your Bill
Instead of a refund check, customers will receive bill credits spread over three months.
For a typical household using about 1,000 kWh per month, the average total credit is about $65.61.
Estimated Monthly Reductions by Utility:
-
Toledo Edison: About $17.81 off per month
-
Ohio Edison: About $13.27 off per month
-
The Illuminating Company: About $1.02 off per month
Actual savings may vary based on usage and recent rate adjustments.
Extra Help for Low-Income Households
Out of the $249 million settlement:
-
$20 million is set aside for:
-
Low-income energy assistance
-
Energy efficiency programs
-
Weatherization projects
-
These programs are meant to reduce future bills, especially for households on fixed or limited incomes.
